some punchand try and keep me awake. And then he seated himself at his desk, while Constanceprepared the comforting beverage, for which he had aweakness, and began to relate to him the story of Cinder-ella. It has been stated that Frau Mozart had a greatgift for telling stories, and she would weave humorousremarks into the thread of her narrative which wouldelicit roars of merry laughter from the big child, herhusband. Far from disturbing him these little distrac-tions helped to make his task easy. When Cinderellawas finished Aladdin was commenced, and Mozart con-tinued to work. Mozart, aged 34. This portrait, regarding which some doubts as to its authenticity have been expressed, was painted at Mayence, in 1790, by Tischbem. Mozart—f. SCi. Mozart: The Man and the Artist, 305 fatigued him very much. Constance, seeing him thuswearing himself out, advised him to take a rest for a whileupon the sofa, promising to awake him in an hours time.He fell asleep at once and so profoundly that at the houragreed upon his wife scrupled to awake him from suchbeneficent repose. She resolved to let him sleep an hourlonger, and after this fresh delay she regretfully decidedto call him. It was then five oclock in the morning andthe copyist was due to come at seven. Mozart madeone boimd from the sofa to the table and recommencedwriting as if he had only that moment laid aside his pen;his hand raced rapidly along the paper to make up for ■lost time. To the minute at seven oclock the copyist 1entered the room. At the same moment the master dashed jhis last note on to the score
