1949 NASCAR New York State Champion, Bobby Cameron, NASCAR car #22, is killed doing practice laps before a race at Lancaster Speedway on June 5th, 1960. He was the first ever NASCAR Safety Official, given the title in 1956 and a Union Supporter and Organizer. The circumstances of his death were very unusual. The Spotter at the Pit Exit was not in his position and no back up Spotter was ever hired. Pictured here is the NASCAR Sanctioned Championship Race Silver Platter Trophy awarded him on October 30th, 1949. The Secretary of NASCAR at the time was William Tuthill and he was in attendance.
