Summary
[edit]| DescriptionNarrow Road, Wide Verge - geograph.org.uk - 154827.jpg |
English: Narrow Road, Wide Verge These very wide verges on minor roads are often indicative of roads which used to be used for cattle droving. During World War II, this particular stretch of road was blocked by the military who were guarding a number of tarpaulin covered trailers stored on the wide verge. It is not known what was being guarded, but speculation that the trailers stored bombs filled with chemical warfare agents may not be unfounded. At the beginning of the war it was widely believed that Nazi Germany would use chemical weapons and the United Kingdom also made such weapons. This is a very sparsely populated area of Lincolnshire but it was also within 30 miles of a large number of Bomber Command airforce bases. It would have been a very good place to store such weapons for immediate retaliation had they been used on UK Cities. |
