n by choice. Pre-daceous beetles are eaten in spring, as they are among thefirst insects to appear, but in early summer caterpillarsform an important part of the diet, and are replaced a littlelater by grasshoppers. Beetles are eaten at all times exceptwhen grasshoppers are more easily obtained. So far asits vegetable food is concerned, the bluebird is positivelyharmless. They take readily to artificial nesting sites, and appre-ciate bird boxes and cotes that are erected for that purpose.Every dooryard should be adorned by such a bird house. They return annually to build their nests in the hole in theold apple tree. Dry grass is the principal composition usedin constructing the abode. Four or five light blue or some-times pure white eggs are laid in April or early May. Fre-quently a second brood is raised in July. The habits are similar to those of thebluebird. The birds feed upon insects, worms, wild fruit, andseeds. They are able to adapt themselves to climatic con-ditions and weather some of the severest storms. In certain portions of our Western States the birdsshow a preference for the habitation of man, and build theirnests in nooks and crevices about barns and sheds. Fre-quently the deserted excavations constructed by variouswoodpeckers are used as nesting sites.
