Description |
English: PH Coll 794.24 Built in Philadelphia in 1890. The CITY OF SEATTLE was purchased by George B. Dodwell of the Washington & Alaska Steamship Co. in 1896 for use in southeast Alaska trade. The company provided six monthly sailings to Wrangell, Juneau, Dyea and Skagway, using the CITY OF SEATTLE, the CLEVELAND, and the ROSALIE. The ship transported prospectors during the great Yukon gold rush. She was known as the Alaska Flyer and the Alaska Express. Subsequently transferred to the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. at some point between 1901 and 1904. Ran aground at Trial Island in September 1906 but was refloated. Later transferred to the new Pacific Steamship Co. in 1916 as part of merger deal. She was sold to the Miami Steamship Co. in 1921 and served along the East Coast for the rest of her career. Scrapped in Philadelphia in 1937. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest." Seattle: The Superior Company, 1966)
