Summary[edit]

Description
English: Electronegative chlorine swipes an electron from Na to make Na+ and Cl-. Since Na loses an electron, it is oxidized to Na+. Cl gains and electron and is reduced to Cl-. Both atoms now satisfy the octet rule. Na+ and Cl- have opposite charges and can make an ionic bond to form NaCl.
