Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a digitally enhanced image of four tubes of bacterial culture showing different oxygen preference for microbial growth in fluid thioglycollate medium. Tube A is the control tube containing only media and shows the two layers: the upper layer is rich in oxygen while the lower layer is deprived of oxygen. Tube B shows the growth of an obligate anaerobe, which is restricted to the lower region deprived of oxygen. Tube C shows the growth of a facultative aerobe, which grows in both layers, with a higher concentration in the oxygen-rich layer. Tube D shows the growth of an obligate aerobe, whose growth is restricted to the upper oxygen-rich layer.
