Summary[edit]

Description

This bag is made in the traditional style of raffia bags carried over the shoulder of men among the Bamileke people of Cameroon. The beads are threaded then sewn onto a raffia weave lining and then lined inside with old indigo resist dyed hand loomed Ndop cloth. The age is uncertain however component beads are Czech cast glass and probably date to the 1940 - 50's Beaded items such as this were commissioned as gifts to be given to the Fons or provincial rulers and displayed in their courts as a status symbol. The bag weighs 2.4kg and measures: bag - 32 x 42cm and with handles and tail 72cm AU$ 385
