Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão The ancient Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão sits in a small square of granite cobbles in the tranquil hamlet of Balsemão. It's a pleasant three-kilometre walk from Lamego, with the turns all signposted, taking you down into the valley and above a rushing river. Believed to have been founded in the seventh century by the Suevi, the present foundations were actually laid in the tenth century during the Reconquista. The undistinguished granite facade and dark interior give it the air of a family vault, an impression strengthened by the imposing fourteenth-century sarcophagus of the Bishop of Porto, Dom Afonso Pires, who was born in Balsemão. The florid capitals encircling the tomb make the few remaining Suevi curls on the archway into the choir seem subdued by comparison. Look out for the profoundly pregnant statue of Nossa Senhora do Ó (that's Ó as in the shape of her belly, though others ascribe it to the exclamation uttered when seeing it: Ó! Nossa Senhora, Mãe de Deus...). |
