La construction de l'édifice commença le 1er octobre 1876 selon les plans de l'architecte Pierre Cuypers. Le musée ouvrit ses portes à sa nouvelle adresse le 13 juillet 1885. La façade avant du musée est située sur le Stadhouderskade mais, de l’autre côté, l’édifice occupe une place de choix de la Museumplein, parmi d’autres édifices culturels construits ultérieurement, le Concertgebouw (1888), le Stedelijk Museum (1895) et le Musée Van Gogh (1973). |
