As Tabriz is the commercial centre of northwestern Persiaand its trade with Europe is constantly growing, I may appro-priately add a few words regarding the commercial relations ofPersia and the United States.^ The Treaty of Friendship andCommerce between the United States and Persia was concludedDecember 13, 1856, and came into force in the following year.The phrasing of its opening paragraph is interesting, as it givesthe royal titles of the Shah. I reproduce it verbatim. OUR TRADE WITH PERSIA 47 armies are as numerous as the stars; whose greatness calls to mind thatof Jemshid; whose magnificence equals that of Darius; the Heir ofthe Crown and Throne of the Kaianians; the Sublime Emperor of allPersia: being equally and sincerely desirous of establishing relationsof friendship between the two governments which they wish tostrengthen by a treaty of commerce and friendship and useful tothe citizens and subjects of the two high contracting parties — havefor this purpose named for their plenipotentiaries . . . Then the names of the respective appointees are given andthese are followed by a series of eight articles regarding thefriendly and diplomatic relations of the tvro countries andtreating of matters of trade and commerce, as well as the obli-gations to be fulfilled by both parties and the privileges to beenjoyed.
