  • Significance: The small community of Pettigrew, Arkansas is located forty-one miles east of Fayetteville, on Highway 16. The town is presently only a wide spot in the road, but in its heyday it was more populous and billed itself as "The Hardood Capitol of the World." From the late 1800's to the 1930's Pettigrew's main industry was the harvesting and processing of trees. The wood was milled, stacked and then shipped by the now defunct St. Paul Branch of the Fayetteville & Little Rock Railroad. After the timber was cleared out and with no other industry to replace it, the town's prosperity slowly faded. The last train serviced the community in 1937, and the tracks were pulled up. Pettigrew's school house was built sometime between 1905 and 1910 and located across the White River from the Main Street and business district. It was accessed by a foot bridge; an arrangement that isolated the school from the growing "boomtown" that was concentrated across the river. The character of the "country" Greek Revival school building is based on a double square classical proportioning system. The foundation is mortar laid native field stone, while the super-structure is constructed principally of pine which is not indigenous to the area. The lumber used was most likely a component of a pre-milled kit. The exterior walls were painted white. The high hipped roof was originally covered in cedar shingles but they have since been replaced with sheet metal roofing. Pictorial evidence shows the presence of a bell tower above the front entrance. The bell tower has since been removed.
