ry morning to attend to the affairs of thenation. A citizen of Washington thus pictures the daily scene: () He always has a company of twenty-five or thirty cavalrymen, with sabres drawn and held upright over their shoulders. The partymakes no great show in uniforms or horses. Mr. Lincoln, in the sad-dle, generally rides a good-sized, easy-going gray horse. He is dressedin plain black, somewhat rusty or dusty; wears a black stiff hat, andlooks about as ordinary in attire as the commonest man. A lieutenant, with yellow straps, rides at his left, and following behind, two by two, come the cavalrymen, in their yellow striped jackets. They are gener-ally going at a slow trot, as that is the pace set them by the one theywait upon. Sometimes the President comes and goes in an open barouche. The cavalry always accompany him with drawn sabres. Often I noticehe halts at the residence of the Secretar)?- of War and holds conferencesthere. He does not alight, but sits in the carriage, and Mr. Stantoncomes out to attend him. Sometimes his son, a boy of ten or twelve, accompanies him, riding at his right on a pony. Earlier in the summerI occasionally saw the President and his wife, towards the latter partof the afternoon, out in a barouche on a pleasure ride. Mrs. Lincolnwas dressed in complete black, with a long crape veil. The equipage isof the plainest kind—only two horses, and they nothing extra. Theypassed me once ver)^ close, and his look, though abstracted, happenedto be directed steadily in my eye. He bowed and smiled, but beneathhis smile I noticed the sadness.
