Pompeian cellars, especially in the suburban villa, and in theHouse of the Faun, where they may still be seen standingupright, in their original posture. The other picture represents a drinking scene. Four 2 E 4l8 POMPEII. figures are seated round a tripod table, hardly higher thanthe benches. The dress of two of the figures is remarkablefor the hoods, which resemble the capotes worn by theItalian sailors and fishermen of the present day. Theyuse horns instead of glasses. Above are different sorts ofeatables hung upon a row of pegs. We may conclude, fromthe style of the figures and of the accommodations represented,that the company which usually frequented this house ofentertainment was of a very low class.
