Español: 77. Que se rompe la cuerda. 178 x 221 mm. Aguafuerte, aguada o aguatinta bruñida y punt seca. Un personaje eclesiástico, con rica túnica y amplia capa pluvial, avanza haciendo equilibrios por una cuerda demasiado floja sobre un espeso grupo de curiosos; la casa firme y segura, hacia la cual el equilibrista se dirige, ya no queda a su alcance y el peso del acróbata amenaza romper la ya desgastada maroma: Que se rompe la cuerda es el título de la estampa, a modo de comentario de la multitud que sigue con la vista las evoluciones del purpurado. Quien, por cierto, en el dibujo preliminar del Museo del Prado, porta una tiara que Goya ha preferido omitir en la lámina, lo
que ilustra sobre la primera intención del dibujante y su prudencia o escrúpulo ante una caricatura papal, que la prudencia de Pío VIl no merecía. |
