Notes Companion Salisbury Mantel radio, 1936 Manufacturer- Johns Ltd, Auckland Clive and Victor Johns set up a partnership as importers of radio components and accessories in December 1920. A few years later they set up a private company, Johns Ltd with the slogan "Auckland's Oldest Radio Firm" and by 1928 they had established a factory in Dominion Road making radios and operating under the name "Well Mayde". The "Companion" brand name was introduced in 1933 and remained in production until 1950 when Johns Ltd sold out to the Swan Electrical Company. Johns Ltd also had their own radio station "1ZJ which came on air in 1930 but closed down in 1935 by Government order which saw the closure of a number of private stations.
