This latest Lake Shore & Michigan.Southern Railway switch engine has beenturned out of the Pittsburgh works of theAmerican Locomotive Company. The en-gine stands on six coupled wheels and has^I9x26-in. cylinders, 52-in. drivers, and atotal weight of 130.700 pounds. Theseengines were designed for heavy yardservice and are strongly built with a viewof easily meeting the e.xacting require-ments of this kind of work, and of re-maining out of the shop the full limit oftime. The maximum effort of whichthese engines are capable, viz., 26,000pounds, shows them to be well to the frontin the matter of power, and the weight..which gives a ratio to traction of 5, indi-cates that the machines may be dependedupon to exert the full energy developed,,under anv conditions of rail.

We do not recall the name of any manwho has dropped out of railway service oflate years, who left such an aching voidas that which stands open through Mr.John Mackenzie having resigned the po-sition of Superintendent of MotivePower of the Nickel Plate line which hehas held for about twenty years.
