imself built. • Now Absalom in his lifetime hadtaken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is inthe kings dale.1 A huge rent disfigures it, and intothis the Jews as they go by throw stones, to expresstheir abhorrence of this wicked and unnatural son. Ona line going south is the tomb called the Tomb ofSt. James, and close by it the tomb of Zechariah. This last, like the tomb of Absalom, is cut out of thesolid rock, and goes back to the days of Herod. TheJews claim that it is built in memory of the Zechariahof 2 Chron. xxiv. 20, the martyred son of the highpriest whom they stoned to death for his witnessagainst idolatry; but the Christians look upon it asthat of the Zechariah whose martyrdom is spoken ofby our Lord as one of the latest up to His time.1* Tombs are found in astonishing numbers aroundJerusalem. They abound on the south side of thevalley of Hinnom as well as to the north and east.Very fine and extensive are the sepulchral monuments1 2 Sam. xviii. 18. 2 Matt, xxiii. 35.

The so-called Tombsof the Prophets near the summit of Olivet is a veryextensive and mysterious set of excavations. In thevalley of the Kidron, where it first begins, a shortdistance north-east of the Tombs of the Kings, are thetombs of Simon the Just, and of members of theSanhedrin. These are frequented by Jews as places ofworship on certain festival days. Like all the sects inthe East, they make vows in reference to shaving offthe hair from their own and their childrens heads inhonour of some saint or shrine.Dr. Thomson has wrell said : On the general subject of wellies and sacredtombs, have you ever thought of the interpretationput upon them by our Lord ? In Luke we read,Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of theprophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bearwitne
