Summary[edit]

Description

Images from the annual South Dakota Rangeland Days event held in Philip, SD, June 19-20, 2012. The event is an opportunity to learn more about one of the most important South Dakota resources, our rangelands.

Learning activities are designed for a variety of age groups and expertise, from 8-years-old through adult. Starting with plant morphology and identification on up to judging habitat suitability for cattle or grouse.

There are over 1,100 different plants found in the prairie, with about 350 types of grasses! Plant identification can be quite challenging! South Dakota has over 650 types of soils. The soil influences the species and forage productivity of the plants found there.

Farmers and ranchers use livestock to harvest the forage produced by the soil, sunlight and precipitation. Science-based information, about plants and soils as well as animal health and needs, is used by producers to make decisions about grazing management strategies. Rangeland Days provides all ages with appropriate training from an introduction to continuing education credits.

Everyone is welcome. Sponsors include SDSU Extension Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Counservation Districts of Haakon County and Jackson County.

For information, contact Haakon County Conservation District, P.O. Box 130, Philip, SD or (605) 859-2186, Ext. 3.
