Description A forest scene in 19th century New Zealand. Drawing by William Strutt entitled Rata nui (Great rata tree). Shows the descending roots of a Northern rata (Metrosideros robusta) linked together by girdling roots, all surrounding a dead and decaying host tree. There is a Māori woman seated at its base. There is a nikau palm (Rhopalostylis sapida) growing in the background and epiphytes are growing from the tree's trunk.
