In this race of the red deer, which may intergrade with some of thewestern races by means of the Carpathian form, the height at the shoulderreaches to about 4;- feet, and the build is stouter, the neck thicker, and the face in the hinds longer and more pointed than in the true reddeer. The summer coat of immature animals is very generallymarked with numerous yellowish spots, and at all ages is much less redthan in the western races, being, in fact, grey in September. The colourof the winter coat is dark slaty grey on the back, with the rump-patchof a very bright yellow, and a large amount of black on the shoulders. The average weight is given as about 560 lbs. The typical locality of the maral is the Caspian provinces of NorthernPersia, whence this or allied races extend into the Crimea, and prob-ably Asia Minor, and so on into Transcaucasia, the Caucasus, probablyCircassia, and the Galician Carpathians. In the Marmaros district of 30 RECORDS OF BIG GAME the Hungarian Carpathians there occurs, as stated above, a stuntedform of maral, known as the Pohsh stag, beHeved to be an immigrantfrom GaHcia. In the Bukovina district of the GaHcian Carpathianssportsmen recognise a large grey stag in the plains (apparently thetrue maral) and a smaller and darker mountain race (C. elaphus mon-tanus). It is noteworthy that specimens from the Caucasus haveshorter faces than those from Northern Persia, and thus approximateto the western types.
