Notes Rond zijn achttiende schilderte Rembrandt de vijf zintuigen, zijn vroegst bekende werken; het paneel De Brillenverkoper werd in 1968 in Museum De Lakenhal voor de eerste keer publiek getoond, op de tentoonstelling Rondom Rembrandt, maar gold toen nog als het product van een anonieme schilder uit Rembrandts omgeving. Kort daarna werd het door het Rembrandt Research Project gekwalificeerd als een werk waarvan Rembrandts auteurschap niet kon worden vastgesteld, noch afgewezen. Pas nadat het paneel bij zijn restauratie in 1992 werd ontdaan van zijn beschilderde vergroting uit de 18de eeuw, werd duidelijk dat het om een eigenhandig werk ging. In het Rembrandtjaar 2006 werd het paneeltje voor het eerst sedert eeuwen weer verenigd met twee schilderijen die oorspronkelijk deel uitmaakten van dezelfde reeks.
