MTA New York City Transit reopened the 23 St subway station on the F, M lines on Thursday, November 29, 2018, after four months of repairs to the station's structural steel and concrete. While crews were making these repairs and refurbishing components such as floors, tiles, stairs and the turnstile area, they also modernized the station with new digital screens, countdown clocks, additional brighter lighting, station furniture and new station artwork. The station features 11 glass mosaic portraits, collectively titled "Stationary Figures," by William Wegman, an internationally known artist who lives in the neighborhood, and fabricated by Mayer of Munich. "Stationary Figures" feature Wegman's two Weimaraner dogs, Flo and her brother Topper. The portraits highlight Wegman's deadpan humor by juxtaposing Flo and Topper in poses that suggest the way customers group themselves while waiting for a train at the platform. In some portraits, they're dressed in human clothes and others they're in their natural state. "I feel very lucky to have been able to work with Mayer of Munich whose miraculous work turned grey stones into grey dogs," Wegman said. Photos: Patrick J.
