efiscal year 1896-97 are shown by large charts and numbers of photo-graphs and drawings. The scientific functions and work of the Commission are set forth bymodels and photographs of the exploring vessels Albatross and FishHmv)(, by an assortment of seines, dredges, nets, and by the deep-sea sounding apparatus used in making collections in fresh and saltwater. In this section there is also a full collection of oyster shells,illustrating their sizes at difierent ages, peculiarities common to vari-ous regions, materials used for the attachment of sj)at, various objectsto whicli young oysters adhere, influence of the bottom on the oystersgrowth, and enemies and injuries caused by each. Among the objectsof the American fisheries exhibited are the following: Mounted groupsof northern fur-seals, Stellers sea lions, casts of cetaceans, 150 casts otfood-fishes colored from living or fresh specimens, and painted castsof edible frogs. Tiffany & Company, of New York, acollection of pearls and pearl-bearing- niollusks is shown, consistingof specimens of white, j^ink, brown, copper-colored and fancy-coloredpearls, a set of pearl-bearing shells, instruments for opening them, alsoa water-telescope for finding the niollusks, and illustrations of pearls. In the fisheries section the various forms of nets, traps, weirs, poundnets, seines, pots, dredges, tongs, etc., used in the capture of fresh-water products are fully shown, also characteristic types of fishing craftemployed in the American fisheries, among them the swift New Englandschooner, the Florida smacker, the Chesapeake Bay oyster pungy, theshad boat of the North Carolina sounds, and the San Francisco marketsteamer. In addition to these are numerous large photographs, por-traying the methods adopted in the important commercial fisheries ofthe Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coast
