English: Rifle inspection, Western Front, during World War I. Soldiers who have just come out of the trenches have cleaned their rifles and are lining up for the weapons to be checked by a sergeant. Another sergeant is making notes. The muddy conditions made it imperative that weapons were cleaned as soon as possible so that they did not rust.
This photograph was probably taken after the autumn of 1916, because many of the men are wearing the sleeveless leather jerkins, lined with blanket, that were issued late in 1916.
