Summary[edit]
DescriptionRock armour revetment Hampton-on-Sea.JPG |
English: Rock armour revetment viewed looking south along Hampton Pier Avenue from the west side of Hampton jetty at Hampton-on-Sea, Herne Bay, Kent, England. This site features in Will Scott's 1955 children's book Half-Term Trail, but is described in the era before 1994 when the revetment did not exist. The rocks in the foreground conceal a set of steps which ran from the path at the top down the side of the wall in a northerly direction (towards the camera) down to the beach. The boy in Scott's story leaves the bus shelter (seen by the red lifebuoy along the road), descends by these steps and crosses the beach going towards the back of the bay where Westbrook flows onto the beach. The photograph was taken at half tide; it is possible to walk to the back of the bay from here at low tide. In the 1950s and 1960s children would often use these steps, although they were derelict and damaged by then. |
