Die Engelsburg in Rom wurde als Mausoleum für den römischen Kaiser Hadrian und dessen Nachfolger gebaut. Begonnen wurde der Bau um 133 n. Chr. Mit Beginn des 10 Jhd. gelangte die Anlage in den Besitz des Vatikans. Die folgenden Päpste bauten das Grabmal dann zur Flucht Burg um. Zwischen der Burg und dem Vatikan gibt es eine verborgenen oberirdischen Fluchtweg den unter andern Papst Klemens VII nutzte, als die Truppen Kaiser Karl V Rom 1527 plünderten. (Sacco di Roma) Es wurde unter anderem die folgenden Kaiser dort begraben: Marcus Aurelius Antonius Bassianus (Caracalla), Mark Aurel, Hadria mit seiner Frau, Antonius Pius und seine Frau Faustina. The Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome was built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian and his successor. The construction began around 133 AD With the beginning of the 10th century, the plant became the property of the Vatican. The following popes built the tomb to be a refuge. Between the Castle and the Vatican, there is a hidden escape way. It was used among others, Pope Clement VII, when the troops Emperor Karl V sacked Rome 1527th (Sacco di roma)
