Mr Clough telephoned and told the finds Liaison Officer that he was serving with the Second Fifth Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, and was digging trenches at Monte Cassino when he found three coins.

After six years of fighting in France, North Africa, Italy and Greece, Mr Clough was given medical leave due to battle fatigue.
