Summary[edit]
DescriptionRound Norman Chapel, Ludlow Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1745696.jpg |
English: Round Norman Chapel, Ludlow Castle Situated in the inner bailey, the Norman Chapel or Round Chapel was possibly built by Hugh de Lacy. It is dedicated to St Mary Magdelene.
Only the circular nave remains but there are traces of the ruined rectangular chancel. Round chapels such as this were associated with The Knights Templar who would have seen such round church buildings whilst on the First Crusade in 1099. The ruins to the left are of a later date and are described as 'The North Range.' Note the typical semi-circular arches of the Norman period. |
