Rifleman S/2062 Gilbert ANGELINETTA. 7th Rifle Brigade. Born 1894 Lydia (single person) Clifford formerly Angelinetta, daughter of John Angelinetta. 1901 with his mother (Lydia Clifford) at High Street, Wootton Bassett. 1911 -1914 with his mother at High Street Wootton Bassett, occupation (1911) labourer at a saw mills (Timber). 10 December 1915 his mother and stepfather William Clifford were at 47 Church Street, Wotton Bassett. Some notes from what remains of his army record. Enlisted 5 September 1914 aged 26, occupation Black smith striker. Posted to Rifle Brigade at Winchester. Stationed at Witley Surrey 1915 . He was on a military charge for offences which took place the 26 February 1915. 1. Absent from Roll Call at 9pm until 10-30 pm. 2 Creating a disturbance in barrack room after lights out. 3 Using filthy language to a N.C.O. (Non Commissioned Officer) He was sentence the following day by Col H.C. Petre to 10 days Field Punishment No 2. expires 8 March 1915. He embarked to France 20 July 1915 and was killed in action 30 July 1915. Served 329 days. Killed in action 30 July 1915. His mother was granted a war gratuity 10 December 1915 revised 14 July 1919. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres Belgium.

Private 22450 Oliver Ernest ANGELINETTA. 6th Wiltshire Regiment. Born 1897 to Albert George and Sarah Emily Angelinetta, of 120, High Street Wootton Bassett. 1897 to his enlistment into the army with his parents and siblings at High Street Wootton Bassett. Died 8 July 1916 aged 19. His father was granted a war gratuity 4 October 1916 revised 25 August 1919. At rest in Serre Road Cemetery No 2, France.

Lance Corporal 236296 Arthur BEAZLEY. 7th King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Born 1887 in Wootton Bassett resided at Holmer Herefordshire. 1891-1901 with his parents and siblings at Wood Street, South side, Wootton Bassett. Occupation (1901) aged 14 Stable boy, groom. 1911 Boarder with the Frost family at Banner Leigh Stables Leigh Woods Bristol Somerset, occupation Groom. Died of wounds in a Field Hospital at Esterel, France 30 March 1918. His widow Edith nee Davies who he married 1913 was granted a war gratuity 19 June 1919. At rest in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery Souchez, France.

Rifleman 375962 Herbert BEAZLEY. 1/8th London Regiment (Post Office Rifles). Born 1899 to John and Thirza Beazley, of 16, Wood Street Wootton Bassett. 1901 he is not mentioned but he would have been with his parents and siblings at Wood Street. 1911 with his parents and siblings at Wood Street, Wotton Bassett. Died 17 July 1918. His father was granted a war gratuity 5 March 1919 revised 16 December 1919. At rest in Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension France.

Sergeant 18159 Christopher BLANCHETT. B. Coy 3rd Canadian Infantry. Killed in action 17 June 1915. Born 6 September 1883 ( source, army record)( Birth was registered in 1881) to Frederick and Mary Blanchett, nee Curry. 1891 with his parents at Whitehill Lane, Wootton Bassett. 1900 he was Private 6195 with the 3rd Wiltshire Regiment when he deserted 28 June 1900 aged 18 from Kilworth Army Camp Knockanenabohilly, Co. Cork, Ireland. Husband of Mildred Ellen, nee Sainsbury who he married in Wootton Bassett 11 April 1903. 1911 with his wife and children at 13 Victory Row, Wootton Bassett. Occupation, employed by the Great Western Railway as 2nd man, railway platelayer. Killed in action in action 17 June 1915. Some notes from remains of his army record. Joined 19 September 1914 into the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers, Canada at Private 18159. Born at Wootton Bassett, previously served with the Wiltshire Regiment for 4 years. Status, widower. Prior to embarkation to England, he was transferred to 9th Canadian Infantry. Date not recorded he along with the 9th Bn embarked from Canada to Canadian (Transit) Camp Shorncliffe Kent. It was the largest of the bases located on the Kent coast and twenty miles from France. The 2 May 1915 his he and his unit embarked from Folkestone for France. Disembarking the next day where he and others were posted to 3rd Battalion. He was reported missing in action, later changed to killed in action 17 June 1915, and was laid to rest in Duck’s, Bill, France behind grave No 37. It appears that the temporary burial location may have been destroyed by military action from both sides.

UK, De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, 1914-1919 Full extract Christopher Blanchett. Sergt No 18159, 3rd Battn Canadian Expeditionary Force. Son of Frederick Blanchett of Whitehill Cottage Wootton Bassett by his wife Mary daughter of James Curry Co Somerset. Born Wootton Bassett, Co Wilts. Education Council School there; enlisted in the Wiltshire Regt served through the South African war afterwards going to Canada in April 1913. After the outbreak of war he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force August 1914 and was killed in action at Ducks’ Bill France 19 June 1915. He married at Wootton Bassett 11 April 1903 Mildred Ellen daughter of William Sainsbury of Wootton Bassett and had a son and two daughters. Stuart born 19 January 1912; Zita Mary Asenatte born 2 May 1907 and Mildren Christina born 22 May 1909.

Private 28341 Alan BROWN. 8th Somerset Light Infantry. Born at Highcliffe Hampshire to Frederick John and Florence Martha Brown. 1901-1911 with his parents and siblings at Garden House, Cold Overton, Leicestershire. At the time of his death his parents were residing at The Cross Keys (Public House) Wootton Bassett. enlisted at Chippenham, Wiltshire. Killed in action 10 July 1918 aged 18. At rest in Couin New British Cemetery, France.

Private Ply/1413/S (Birth name Eltham Bryan Brown). (Memorial has Brian BROWN). 2nd Royal Marine Light Infantry, Royal Naval Division. Born 5 December 1893 at Christchurch, Hampshire to Frederick John and Florence Martha Brown. 1901-1911 with his parents and siblings at Garden House, Cold Overton, Leicestershire. Husband of Ethel Brown, nee Marriott of 11 New Street, Oakham. Joined at R.M. Depot, Deal 16 February 1916 aged 22 years, 2 months and 11 days, occupation motor driver. 2August 1916 posted to (Royal Marine Brigade) HMS Victory. Killed in action 26 October 1917. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Stoker K15474 1st Class Hedley BROWN Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on HMS Aboukir Born 21 March 1892 at Christchurch, Hampshire to Frederick John and Florence Martha Brown. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Garden House, Cold Overton, Leicestershire. Drowned at sea on the sinking of his ship by German U-Boat 22 September 1914 aged 22 years His mother of The Gardens Gates Hill St Neots Huntingdon was informed of his death. Notes from his Naval record on Ancestry. He joined the Royal Navy 5 July 1912 on HMS Pembroke II Shore Base at Chatham, Kent at Stoker 2nd Class number K15474. Born at Christchurch Hampshire, occupation gardener. 8 July 1912 he signed up for a period of twelve (12) years. Served on HMS Implacable 9 November 1912. Promoted to Stoker 1st Class, 8 August 1913. On HMS Aboukir 19 August 1913 attached to Cressy 1 June 1914. Returned to his ship 26 July 1914. Drowned in the North Sea when his ship was sunk by German submarine. 22 September 1914 His body was not recovered. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

His father was granted a war gratuity 15 June 1916 revised 2 September 1919. Commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

Private 449 Ernest Sidney COX. E Coy, 16th Australian Infantry (Australian Imperial Force.) Born 8 July 1893 to James and Lucy Jane Cox, nee Reeves. 1901 (Sidney Ernest) with his parents and siblings at Bath Road, Swindon, Wiltshire. 1911 with his parents and brother at Ryelands Farm, Wootton Bassett., occupation working for his father on the farm. Joined up 23 September 1914 in Helena Vale, Western Australia aged 21 years and 2 months, occupation, farming. His father resided at 22 Wharf Road, Broughton, his mother resided at 52 Avenue Road, Swindon. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia with his unit on H.M.A.T A40, Ceramic, 22 December 1914 bound for Gallipoli, Turkey. Air Mechanic 2nd Class 65286 Albert EDMONDS. 75 Squadron Home Defence Goldington attached to 2nd Training Squadron Royal Flying Corps. Formerly Private with the Durham Light Infantry (Cap Badge on photo). Born 1887 to Edwin Hugh and Fanny Mary Edmonds, nee Walker. 1891 with his parents and siblings at Hook Street, Lydiard Tregooze, Wiltshire. 1901-1911 with his parents and siblings at Coped Hall, Wootton Bassett. 1911 occupation, Agriculture Engineer and Machinist Killed in a mid-air collision with another aircraft in the vicinity of RAFf Wynton Cambridgeshire 20 August 1917 Cause of his death. He was flying with Pilot Lt William James Pierce in a Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2e B4451 when it collied in mid air with another B.E. 2e, registration No’s A1316 of 20 Training Squadron, Wynton flown by Lt Louis Joseph Purgold in the vicinity of Wynton aerodrome. at 11am 20 August 1917. He was killed age 30. Court of inquiry concluded the death was unavoidable owing to a cloud being between the two machine which were approaching each other from opposite directions which meant that the respective pilots from seeing the other machine until too late to avoid a collision. The Court do not consider that there was carelessness over the part of each pilot.

The other fatality was Lt Louis Joseph Purgold aged 21. He is at rest in Allerton Cemetery, Liverpool, Lancashire. Lt William James Pierce was injured.

Enlisted at Wootton Bassett Nephew of Ernest Foster, of "Haysley" 28, Leaphill Road Pokesdown Hampshire. 1911 residing aged 13 with his Aunt and Uncle Charles and Amy Beatrice Furling Waite of St Helens, High Street Wootton Bassett. His uncle first wife was Mary Ann Foster daughter of William Foster. Died of wounds in 19th General Hospital, Alexandria 4 November 1918 aged 21. His grandfather George ? was granted a war gratuity 23 May 1919 revised 9 February 1920. At rest in Hadra War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.

Serving as Private 641 with the 1st Wiltshire Regiment aged 22 years in South Africa in the Boer War. Husband of Nellie, nee Clark later remarried after his death to Gillett of Rebel Cottages, Bushton, Wootton Bassett, Wilts. Killed in action 8 July 1916 aged 29 years. His widow was granted a war gratuity 10 July 1917 revised 18 October 1919, was then called Nellie Gillett. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Private 33004 John Charles Bromwich GIBBS. 1st Wiltshire Regiment. Formerly Private 1672 Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry Born 6 November 1897 only son of Ernest Bromwich Gibbs and Louisa Mary Gibbs, nee Goodman. 1901 with his parents and sister at High Street, Wootton Bassett. 1911 with his parents and siblings at Station Road, Wootton Bassett. 28 September 1914 he was employed by the Great Western Railway Co as a wages Clarke in the locomotive department. When he died his parents were residing at of 30, Station Road Wootton Bassett. Died of wounds in 1st Casualty Clearing Station, Chocques Jan, France 10 February 1917 aged 19. His father was granted a war gratuity 6 September 1917 revised 24 October 1919. At rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France.

Residing at 46 High Street. His wife was residing at 169 High Street, Wootton Bassett. Passed away 13 November 1920 aged 22 years. At rest in Wootton Bassett Cemetery.

His first marriage was April 1906 to Caroline Ann Cave who died 26 January 1907. They were residing at High Street, Wootton Bassett his occupation, rural letter carrier. 23 April 1908 he married Edith James at Chippenham parish church. He was aged 29, a postman. 1911 with his Edith at Coxstalls, Wootton Bassett, occupation, Postman. At the time of his death his wife was residing at 2, Manor Cottage, Kington Langley, Chippenham, Wilts. Killed in action 15 December 1916. His widow was granted a war gratuity 18 April 1917 revised 25 November 1919. At rest in Woods Cemetery, Belgium.

Born 1886 to Henry James and Mary Jane Hunt. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at the Castle and Ball public house, High Street, Wootton Bassett. 1901 with his parents and siblings on the family farm at Tinkers Lane, Wootton Bassett, occupation aged 14 agricultural worker. 1911 his widowed father residing with his children at High Street, Wootton Bassett. He emigrated to Melbourne, Australia 5 April 1907 on ship, Empress of Ireland aged 21 occupation, farmer. He died of wounds at 6th Australian Field Ambulance 28 July 1916 which he received in action in France. Some notes from his army record. Died of wounds 28 July 1916.

Born 1891 to Henry James and Mary Jane Hunt. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at the Castle and Ball public house, High Street, Wootton Bassett. 1901 with his parents and siblings on the family farm at Tinkers Lane, Wootton Bassett. 1911 his widowed father residing with his children at High Street, Wootton Bassett, he was working as a farmer for his cousin, John C Henley at Hardings Farm, Purton Stoke, Purton, Wiltshire He married Lily Augusta Webb 20 October 1915 at Christ Church, Derry Hill Wiltshire. His occupation at the time of marriage was Trooper, 2nd Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. At the time of his death his widow was residing at 107 High Street, Wootton Bassett. Embarked from Halifax with 144th Battalion (Winnipeg Rifles) Canadian Infantry for England 18 September 1916 on S.S. Olympic. Disembarking at Liverpool 29 September 1916. He was transferred to 18th Reserve Battalion on the day that the 144th were absorbed into the 18th on the 12 January 1917 at Seaford Brighton. He was drafted on the 2 April 1917 whilst at Seaford into 8th Battalion and embarked for France 21 April 1917. Reported missing in action and presumed killed on or near 10 November 1917.

Sergeant (Flight Engineer) 221828 Robert Louis DINNEN. Royal Air Force attached to 420 (Snowy Owl) Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force at RAF Tholthorpe, Yorkshire Son of John and Susan Dinnen, of Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, Irish Republic. He was part crew of seven in a Handley Page Halifax Mk III Bomber Serial No’s NA190 which took of at 1829 from RAF Tholthorpe bound for a target at Chemnitz, Germany. The plane crashed and blew up at 1720 hrs at Hazelwood Castle (Hayton Woods) 3 miles South West of Tadcaster, North Riding, Yorkshire. 5 March 1945. The only survivor was Mid Upper gunner Flt Sgt James H Waugh RCAF who bailed out of the aircraft and survived the others died at the scene. The bodies of the remainder of the crew were unrecoverable for most part and reclassified “killed!”. He was aged 21 years. Cause of the crash. The plane flew into a freezing cloud layer which caused the pale to plane to Ice up on outbound leg which caused the plane to dive steeply into the ground. There had been reports from other pilots about the freezing ice in the vicinity. From the records of Robert George Smith RCAF who also died in the same crash is a note from Adjutant Flight Lieutenant A T Mackenzie 420 Sqdn RCAF dated 7 March 1945 at 1030 hrs. Possible to the Base Commander of 420 Squadron. Brief extract. The aircraft (a/c) crashed with a full bomb load which had exploded on impact with the result that the a/c was entirely disintegrated. No bodies had been recovered and only small bits of clothing had so far been picked up. He did not believe any bodies would be recovered. 19 Jun 1941. HMS Vanessa is damaged by a German aircraft while on patrol in the North Sea. She suffered a direct amidships, blowing up boilers, the fore funnel was blasted overboard, and the deck opened up. Eleven ratings and the engineer officer were killed and many of the crew were injured and burned. The damaged destroyer collided with anti-submarine trawler HMS Turquoise. Vanessa was towed to Yarmouth by destroyer HMS Vesper.

Sergeant 1312812 Wireless Operator Bertram Arthur GIBBS Royal Air Force VR attached to 490 Squadron, Royal New Zealand Air Force. Son of Alfred John and Elizabeth Mary Gibbs, of Wootton Bassett He was part of a crew of six flying in a Flying Boat, Catalina Ib FP112 which departed at 14.45, 18 November 1943 and flew low over the Freetown harbour estuary near Pepel. The port wing struck the water and the aircraft crashed and caught fire killing six on board. Four bodies were recovered He was aged 20 years. At rest in King Tom Cemetery, Freetown Sierra Leone.

Source for the following. My Father's War in the Mediterranean The (above) plane was flown from Elizabeth City North Carolina where the transatlantic crew took delivery of the assembly line. After the necessary checks the set off on 15 September 1943 via different countries. The crew returned to 490 Squadron by ferrying Catalina 1B registration FP 112 dubbed Marlborough arriving at Freetown West Africa 20 October 1943.

Stoker 1st Class P/KX 100497 Reginald Sam INKPEN. Royal Navy on H.M.S. Hood Born 2 March 1920 to Loftus Sam and Mary Inkpen, nee Snell of Wootton Bassett. 1939 his parents were residing at 5 Vale View, Wootton Bassett. May 1941 HMS Hood, and Prince of Wales were sent to search for the German battleship, Bismark. On the morning 24 May 1941 the Bismark was found west of Iceland, resulting in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Bismarck fired a salvo at extreme range (23,000 yards) and scored a hit upon the Hood. HMS Hood was struck in her magazines, for she blew up with a tremendous explosion and she disintegrated. Masts, funnels and other portions of her superstructure were hurled upwards. Of her crew of 1,341 only 3 were saved. He was 21 years.
