The monartery continued for a long time in ruins ; but, in946, as Turketul, the chancellor of King Edred, was on hisway into Northumberland to quell a rebellion there, hehappened to take his way by Croyland, where he found threeold monks who had efcaped the mafTacre of the Danes, and theoppreffive hand of King Beorred, who had feized on the facredlands. Thefe monks had conftru6led a little oratory withinthe ruins, where they received the great chancellor in the beftmanner they could, fhowed him the relics of St. Guthlac, andrelated to him the ftory of their misfortunes.
