amount to mereamplification of what appears here in print, orare essentially insignificant. W. M. ROSSETTI. London, February 1898. P.S. — While these sheets were passingthrough the press, the Publisher, Mr. Allen, was so good as to communicate to me an extractfrom a letter which had been addressed to himby Mr. Ruskin from Thun in Switzerland, on xii PREFACE August 9, 1859. It is well worth quoting, asone more indication of the potent sympathy andhopeful anticipation with which the renovatorof our art-code viewed the Praeraphaelite move-ment. I do not know what Mr. RossettisHarp-sketch may have been — possibly TheReturn of Tibullus to Delia. Ive lent Mr.Rossettis Harp-sketch (says Ruskin) to some-body and forget whom. Tell Mr. Rossetti tomind and do the best he can; for he and thegood P.R.B/s may really have Europe for theirfield some day soon. The German art is whollyand everywhere imbecile to a degree quite un-speakable. The P.R.B/s are the only livingfigure-painters of this age.
