Summary[edit]

Description
English: Bronzework for the SS Queen Mary (1934). Pier E, Long Beach, California, U.S.A.
  • Door to the First Class Restaurant. Double doors, each with a decorated handle.
  • Six mythological themes are represented. The handles are an important feature and a certain Chinoiserie has been deliberately inserted into the design of the work, with swallows, scarabs and goldfinches. The pillars of the handles are enriched with cloud forms.
  • The double doors in the 1st Class Restaurant represent some of the ancient legends of famous voyages and incidents which took place on the Sea: Castor and Pollux; The Sirens; The nymphs of the Gardens of the Hesperides; Europa and the Bull; Latona and her children Diana and Apollo; and The birth of Aphrodite. At the foot of the grilles are a triton and a nereid. Scattered about the grilles are various subsidiary motifs – sea-babies riding on dolphins and with angel fish, and birds associated with water. https://www.scribd.com/doc/17256374/Walter-Gilbert-Main-Inventory
