Project HOPE's hospital ship, the S.S. Hope on 16 September 1964. The SS Hope had originally been in service as the U.S. Navy hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) between 1945 and 1955. On 16 March 1960 she was chartered to the "People to People Health Foundation" and renamed SS Hope, an acronym for "Health Opportunity for People Everywhere".
