La Valentina and La Valentina North are 100-percent affordable, mixed-use buildings next to a light-rail stop in Sacramento, California. Energy-efficient features integrated into the buildings, such as awnings that shade windows, lower costs and reduce energy consumption. La Valentina is the winner of EPA’s 2013 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement in the category of Built Projects. The award is given annually for creative, sustainable initiatives that better protect the health and the environment of our communities while strengthening local economies. In 2013, EPA recognized innovative projects in seven communities.
