Same-sex marriage banned4
1 The federal government recognizes all legally performed same-sex marriages, regardless of the current state of residence; but not other same-sex unions. Native American tribal jurisdictions have laws pertaining to same-sex marriage independent of state law. Native American tribal jurisdictions are shown on this map when tribal law explicitly is different from the law in the surrounding state (i.e., when a tribe bans same-sex marriage while it is recognized in the state, or vise versa). 2 Some states in this category also allow other same-sex unions. 3 A ruling striking down Florida's same-sex marriage ban goes into effect 91 days after cert was denied in similar cases on October 6, 2014. 4 Many states in these categories either ban unions similar to marriage or have judicial rulings against bans on unions similar to marriage.
