English: A young soldier standing at sentry duty on a plank bridge across a stream. Behind him are the remains of wrought-iron gates hung from brick pillars, possibly the former entrance to a large house. The gates are hung with camouflage and the words 'wood bridge' have been chalked on one pillar.
As captured villages were often used to billet troops, it was important to keep watch, not only to protect the troops but also to safeguard any stores that were stockpiled there. It was sometimes thought that spies were infiltrated among the refugees in the areas of conflict.
