Summary[edit]

Description
English: This photograph is taken from the edge of a large crater. In the bottom of the crater there are large, thick chunks of broken ice. On the far edge of the crater, one soldier is helping lower another man in.

Whilst many of the images were deliberately taken as propaganda, some, like these, simply document the everyday experience of war.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. Just behind the line, shell holes covered with thick ice and this one has just been hit by another shell.']
