Yet tliis is what Mr. Balfour has to say ofpublic life: If I could wish for some earthly gift tobe given by a fauy to an infant whom I loved, my firstwish would be that under no cii-cumstances should thechild be under any temptation to become a politician. The right hon. gentleman plays golf, and it is hisambition that he should excel in it. He has, moreover,declared that one of the sore regrets of his life is that hedid not take to it in his early years, so that he mighthave mastered this most difficult, as he said, of allgames. It was as much as to say that he would gladlyexchange his success in the Senate for glory on thegolf links. Still, regret it how he may, Mr. Balfour isdestined always to stand forth exalted among politicians.
