Notes
  • 2010 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
  • Significance: Sullivan's Island, South Carolina is a coastal barrier island located to the northeast of Charleston Harbor. Utilized as a health retreat and vacation destination from the early 1810s to the 1930s by the wealthy of Charleston. The island now exists as a full-time residential community. Houses in the islands historic neighborhood of Moultrieville consist mainly of simple one to two story wood structures, many with substantial and distinctive porch designs. The earliest remaining historic houses date to the 1890s. However, many have been altered from their original state. The Nathaniel Barnwell House is a simple and wholely unaltered typical example of these classic beach cottages. Constructed in the early 1920s, this residence has survived both modern beach development practices and the onslaught of inclement weather.
