Description
Deutsch: St. Pantaleon: Auf dem Gelände einer römischen Villa besteht seit dem 9. Jahrhundert eine Kirche zu Ehren des griechischen Märtyrers Pantaleon. 957 Gründung einer Benediktinerabtei mit neuer Kirche durch Erzbischof Bruno, den Bruder Kaiser Ottos des Großen. Die 980 geweihte Kirche, ein Saalbau mit Querannexen, wird unter Kaiserin Theophanu (+991) verlängert, mit dem Westwerk ausgezeichnet und im Osten mit Hauptapsis und Umgangskrypta versehen. Vollendung 996. Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts Erweiterung um zwei gewölbte Seitenschiffe. 1620-22 Neubau der Hauptapsis und Einwölbung des Mittelschiffs. 1890-92 Außen-Rekonstruktion des Westwerks mit halbiertem Westflügel. Nach Kriegsschäden Wiederaufbau ohne Mittelschiffwölbung bis 1962.
English: St. Pantaleon: A church has stood on the site of a Roman villa in honour of the Greek martyr Pantaleon since the 9th century. In 957, foundation of a Benedictine abbey with a new church by archbishop Bruno, brother of Emperor Otto the Great. The church which was consecrated in 980, a hall building with transverse annexes was extended under Empress Theophanu (died 991) distinguished with the westwork and provided with a main apse and deambulatory crypt in the East. Completion 996. In the mid 12th century, extension with two vaulted side aisles. 1620-22, reconstruction of main apse and vaulting of the nave. 1890-92 external reconstruction of westwork with halfed west wing. After damage during the war, reconstruction without nave vaulting until 1962.
