ste, but there is a fit-ness in these things, which the feelings desiderate, andwhich does not in any way savour of vanity and display;whereas the feeling which the grave before us gives riseto, is one of fear lest so perishable a memorial should bedestroyed and lost. I must, however, add that, whenthis impression was made upon me, I was not aware thatthe splendid monument in Winchester Cathedral to theBishops memory was in course of construction. It is acanopied altar-tomb ; but, whilst admitting the desirable-ness of having a memoi^ial of every bishop who has filledthe See m the Cathedral of the diocese, as an archaeologistI do humbly protest against the growing and misleadingpractice of erecting monuments and memorials of asepulchral nature in churches where people are notburied. We all must die, and be buried somewhere. Thesethree crosses, which gave rise to these reflections, bearinscriptions. On that of the Bishop, at the foot of thecross on the headstone, the following words are in-scribed :— Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Winchester, 28 years a Bishop in the Church of God. Died July 19, 1873, aged 67 years. On the other two stones are inscribed the names of hiswife, who died in 1841, and that of his eldest son, whodied in 1856, at the age of 23. Opposite is a sketch ofthese graves so interesting to English Churchmen. I find I cannot leave this subject without some noticeof the circumstances attending Dr. Wilberforces death.No individual death in the present generation has pro-duced so startling a sensation as that which deprived theChurch and society at large of the presence of the emi-nent Bishop of Winchester.
