THE ANCIENT BRIDGE AT BRAMBER. 65 The projection of the centre pier, on the south side, as isalso farther manifest by the Plan (vide Fig. 2), was muchgreater than that on the north, an extra length having beengiven to it of 17 feet; partly, it may be presumed, for the pur-pose of increasing the power of resistance on the side of thebridge on which the force and weight of the tide would be atall times the greatest; but principally, no doubt, to accom-modate a chapel which, as will presently be shown, stood onthis pier, of which some of the mullions of the windowsworked in Caen stone, were found upon it when this bridgewas discovered.
