| Description |
English: Swan Upping beginning at Sunbury Lock. Swan Marker and the monarch's (currently Queen's) boat leave the lock to start 5 days upstream, marking young swans on the Thames. The Dyers and the Vintners crew two other boats for the same purpose. Unmarked swans belong to the Crown, one nick on the beak and rights accrue to to the Dyers, two nicks sees the Vintners accrue their rights, such as on traditional culls for feast days (now abolished) and a register (census) was traditionally kept of numbers. This activity is today only a census. The boatmen also report injured and diseased swans to charities. |
