Summary[edit]

Description
English: The churchyard of St Leonard's parish church is only a short distance from the long-disused slate quarries. There are some very fine headstones here together with the largest number of 17th century Swithland slates to be seen in one place. The large headstone with the rough back is not damaged: this is the characteristic appearance of the uncarved face of a Swithland Slate headstone. Because the slate is very hard and cleaves poorly, the smoothing of the slate was a laborious business, so the uncarved face was normally left like this. This is true even of those with the most delicate carving and lettering.
