Description
English: Student fencing in Tübingen in 1831.
Image shows students fencing using "Korbschläger" as weapons, representing the student fraternities "Corps Franconia Tübingen" (left, colours: mossgreen-pink, wearing green caps) and "Corps Suevia Tübingen" (right, colours: black-white-red, wearing white caps), on the right with a top hat the "Paukarzt" (fencing doctor).
It is an interesting side note that the seconds standing immediately by the two combatants and also the "Corps Suevia Tübingen" student combatant have taken the parry position known in fencing terminology as "Prime" or "First". The positioning of the arm thus protects the face from being hit. It is in fact only in later times as fencing for sport has become more common that the enguarde position of "Sixte" has started to be considered the standard Enguarde position. The prime parry position is considered by some to be the first as it is the natural position of the blade when it has first been drawn from its sheath. Following the various positions through in sequence as to their French names actually presents a quite formidable parrying system (at least in terms of the positions of the day and the cuts as they were then taught).
