Summary[edit]

Description
English: The 'Curved Horn', Castle Park walled garden [detail] Detail of 1023253. The second sculpture in the walled garden 1023227 is the 'Curved Horn' by Diane McCormick from Dungannon. The piece draws its inspiration from the history of Bangor. The name Bangor comes from Beannchor meaning 'curved horn' and relates to the shape of the bay. The curved horns are reminiscent of the prow of a Viking long ship. This reminds us of the importance of seafaring in Bangor with connections to the travels of St Comgall through to modern day sailing boats. The main body of the sculpture is a simple filigree design, incorporating cast shapes in bronze that relate to Bangor's historical past. These include the gold tooth of the whale sent to Beannchair in 739, the Bangor Bell and various plants collected by the Victorians.
