be used like a gaslight paper, and at the same time give a plastic medium,without which I could not give that artistic atmosphere to my prints. Happily my need has been entirely met, for I found what I was looking for in the Artatone gaslight paper. It has come up to all my fond expectations, in fact it has exceeded them in many ways. I have sold many portraits simply be-cause Artatone enabled me to give them the appearance of either etchings, charcoal sketches, or engravings, and with all due humility I attribute my success as photographer to be due in a large measure to the exclusive use of Artatone for my finished prints. The Paper is a tough hand-made Japanese tissue, the emulsion is on both sides, and yields prints from all grades of negatives, giving the most exquisite gradations and beautiful tones.You can use the Enlarging Artatone for contact as well, in fact I prefer it as less time is required for printing. One developer is used for all purposes, whether your negative is thin or 146

By simply following a few ex-plicit directions found on the direction sheet and some of thefollowing hints, you will make prints that will surprise you.In presenting the subject, of the use of Artatone, I shall tracethe successive steps from the negative up to the finished print,giving unreservedly my experiences with it. NEGATIVES: While any negative that will yield a printon any gaslight paper will make an Artatone Print, my per-sonal preference in portraiture is a negative made with aPinkham & Smith soft focus lens of the visual type, tank de-veloped with pyro, preferably soft. The pyro stained softnegative seems to hold up better under the printing light.Some of my soft negatives would be discarded by the averageworker, yet I get fine Artatone prints from them without anyof the usual elaborate manipulations.
