Calcimine, a mixture of zinc-white, glue,water, and pigments, used to finish the plasterwalls of buildings. See Whitewash. Calcination, a term now used as practi-cally equivalent to roasting or oxidation. It isderived from the Latin word calx, meaningquicklime, and received its present significationby extension from its original meaning ofobtaining lime from limestone by the applicationof great heat. By calcination many substancesare reduced to a friable condition, and freedfrom constituents capable of passing off in theform of gas or vapor. Thus various salts maybe deprived of water of crystallization, and ren-dered amorphous in this way; the hydrated car-bonate of magnesium is reduced to the pureoxide, known as calcined magnesia; limestone isconverted into quicklime, etc. Calcination isusually the first process in the extraction ofmetals from their ores.
