Notes
  • Significance: 1) Maj. Gen. George McClellan ordered a reconnaissance-in-force by Maj. Gen. Heintzelman's III Corps for the morning of June 25. Maj. Gen. Hooker's division on the right pushed forward along Williamsburg Road.

2) Brig. Gen. Kearny's division on the left encountered swampy ground and strong resistance from Confederate skirmishers in the woods.

3) About noon, Brig. Gens. Wright's and Ransom's brigades advanced to meet the Federals emerging from the woods, initiating a firefight on French's Farm. Confederate batteries advanced and opened fire.

4) Brig. Gen. Armistead's brigade advanced to stabilize the Confederate skirmish line.

5) Mid-afternoon, Brig. Gen. Mahone counterattacked, driving the Federals back.

6) At dark, the Confederates returned to their fortifications after blunting McClellan's offensive. Gen. Lee would seize the initiative on June 26, attacking at Beaver Dam Creek.
